These three trends are disrupting the auto industry.
Telenor is exploring new business models and concepts in the automotive business. They recently announced Telenor Connect, a new Internet of things (IoT) application that allows drivers to track their cars through apps. It collects data about your car and tells you when to access the car service.
The timing is no coincidence. The Internet of things is said to be one of the biggest technology trends and opportunities in the next few years, especially in the automotive industry. Projections show that by 2020, more than 250 million connected cars will be on the road. Cars will use some form of Internet of things to enable cars to connect to their users and other cars.
In addition to the application, Telenor aims to create an ecosystem around the Telenor Connect platform. Along with insurance companies and the auto industry, they created Nordic cars to connect to BBS.
By enabling new service digital platforms in connected car ecosystems, Telenor can play a central role in driving the Internet of things beyond navigation. Mobile phones provide unlimited opportunities for our partners and entrepreneurial communities to develop content for the application ecosystem. “Said Sigve Brekke, President and CEO of Telenor group.
Sustainability and urbanization.
Andrea Sroczynski is a car and transport specialist in the strategic business development of Telenor Connexion. She describes three big trends that have an impact on the automotive industry – sustainability, urbanization and digitisation.
– sustainability is one of the major trends in many industries and one of the major trends in the automotive industry. ‘the main driver of sustainable development is electrification,’ Sroczynski said. ‘we’re going to see more electric cars on the road.’
The second trend – urbanization and more people moving to big cities.
– urbanization means less space, which means a lot of parking problems. Statistics show that it took 70 million hours to find a parking space. That’s about 40,000 jobs a year.
Through AI, the Internet of things and other connections.
The last trend that has broken the car industry is digital, in other words connectivity. The Internet of things, artificial intelligence and other digital technologies can help increase the attractiveness of cars, build customer loyalty and create new revenue streams.
– the auto emergency system will save more than 11,000 lives. That’s the equivalent of 12 years in Los Angeles. Just consider how much impact the digital connected car solution will have in the future.
Industry leaders are increasingly aware of this every year. The KPMG global automotive industry executive survey (GAES) asks 800 car executives in 38 countries each year about the trend. Eighty per cent of respondents said the trend would have a disruptive impact on future business, particularly compared with last year’s survey.
Many companies have taken action. In 2016, ford employees filed a number of patent applications -8000 new inventions. It’s the first time the company has taken place in 113 years, and the number of patents has increased by 90 percent since 2014. Users can expect inventions such as self-driving cars and self-driving cars.
According to the BBC article, so is apple. In December 2016, they first admitted to investing in self-driving technology. They are excited about the potential and benefits of automation systems and transportation. They have even registered the domain name apple.car and apple.auto so they can start new projects later.
What are the challenges of connected cars?
Carmakers are likely to face the challenge of these three trends, particularly in connectivity, Sroczynski added.
– of course, there are concerns about data privacy and cyber security. No matter how advanced your solution is, people need to trust you, Sroczynski says.
The European Union’s network and information security agency (ENISA) has just released a report that points out the good practice of connecting car networks to safety. One of their recommendations is to improve information sharing among industry participants and enhance trust within the ecosystem.
Information sharing is vital, according to the report, to help industry participants “find solutions, challenge the relevance of their security mechanisms, and support the detection and mediation of security issues”. Such stakeholders can discuss the new attack methods they have experienced and help the community find solutions.
Other recommendations in the report are to clarify cybersecurity responsibilities among industry participants and agree on technical standards for good practices.
How to promote innovation
During the Nordic Car Connect Forum, in February, it was discussing how to create more innovation in the ecosystem that connects cars. For example, more cooperation with entrepreneurial communities, especially manufacturers’ space. This photo shows different ways of working together.
Ford recently opened a manufacturer’s space in nanjing, China. This seminar provides a space for employees to collaborate and brainstorm, using 3 d printers, 3 d scanners, plastic molding machines, electronic products, application development, software development such as the prototype.
In the near future, we will see more of this type of collaboration.
